Apple sells refurbished products directly at apple.com/shop/refurbished. They are not third-party resellers. Apple takes the device back, replaces worn parts, tests it, and sells it with the same one-year limited warranty as a new one. iPhones get a new battery and a new outer shell. Every unit ships in a plain white box with the full set of accessories and is eligible for AppleCare+.
That is the whole pitch: new-product warranty, used-product price.
How much do you actually save?
Less than most people expect. Apple's refurb discount runs from about 15% to 25% below the price of the same configuration new. On the refurbished offers we have listed so far, the average discount was 22%, the lowest 15%, the highest 29%. Apple does not do "50% off" on its own store, ever. If you see that number, it is not Apple.
Because the discount is narrow, the sweet spot is expensive hardware. A 15% discount on a $199 Apple Watch SE saves $30. The same 15% on a $2,499 MacBook Pro saves $375. That is why our showcase only lists Apple refurbished products at 20% off or more, and why almost all of them are Macs, high-end iPhones and cellular Watches.
The real trade-off: timing
Apple's refurb inventory is unpredictable. A configuration appears, sells out in hours, and may not return for weeks. The best units (base-model MacBook Air, current-generation iPhone Pro) go first. If you need a specific size, color and storage, you may wait a month.
Two ways to handle this:
- Be flexible on color and storage. The price difference between colors is zero, and 512 GB vs 256 GB refurbished is often the same price as 256 GB new.
- Set an alert. Our Telegram bot sends a message when a refurbished product matching a keyword appears. Apple's store has no alert feature of its own.
When refurbished is NOT the right call
- Apple Watch, base models. The saving is $30 to $60. A sale at Amazon or Best Buy on the new model regularly beats it.
- Last year's iPhone right after a new launch. Carriers and big-box stores discount the new-in-box previous model harder than Apple discounts the refurb.
- You need it this week. Refurb stock is a lottery. A new unit on sale is not.
When it is the right call
- Mac laptops and desktops. Apple rarely discounts new Macs itself, and the refurb discount on a $1,500 to $3,000 machine is real money.
- iPad Pro and iPhone Pro Max. Same logic: high price, narrow discount, still hundreds of dollars.
- You want the warranty and AppleCare+ option. Third-party "renewed" units usually do not qualify.
How we list Apple refurbished
We check Apple's refurbished store every fetch cycle, compute the discount from Apple's own "Was" price, and only publish units at 20% off or more, up to a dozen per cycle so the showcase is not flooded. Identical configurations in different colors are grouped so you see one listing, not six.
